There can be an intensity in silence. Beautiful, but it can be dreadfully loud.
Mark and I love cities. They have a heartbeat. Pounding traffic and shrill sirens, the banging and clanging of construction, human voices abound, and up until October 7th, the Holy Land was full of music too. All of that was replaced with unpleasant decibels.
Israel’s daily bombing sorties and the deep underfoot rumble of the subterranean war arena took a wee toll. Even my short-term ears feel slightly altered but I don’t know exactly how.
So, I put up a red hummingbird feeder the day after returning to the hushed Rocky Mountains. The tiny long beaked creatures shimmer blueish green as their summertime dive bombing into sugar nirvana delights me. And the whole feeding frenzy comes with a welcome peace time whir. It drowns out the awkward void at altitude.
Simplicity. It’s a good thing.
PS. More Israel stories coming very, very soon!
